Kathmandu - Durbar Square - Maju Deval Temple (1690)

This temple was built by the mother of Bhaktapur’s King Bhupatindra Malla in 1690. Maju Deval (Shiva Mandir), a towering pagoda that looms above the center of the square. Perched atop a 10-tiered pyramid, the three-roofed pagoda-style Maju Deval, or Shiva Temple, is by far the most impressive temple on the square and is a favorite of people (both tourists and Nepalis) who want to just sit and soak up the passing scene on Durbar Square. Inside this temple is a Shivalingam, the phallic symbol commonly used to represent Shiva.
