The climate in Tibet, due to its unique geographical characteristics, is cold in winter, cool in summer and generally dry, receiving only 450 millimeters (18 inches) of rain or snow. Rainfall in southern Tibet occurs intermittently between May and September, when the precipitation covers 90 percent of the whole year bringing moisture to barley fields and greenery to the valleys.
